The Wayne Center for the Arts Dance Department presented the culminating performance of their “New Works” project on February 8, 2020, featuring new choreography by nine choreographers in styles from classical to modern.
Auditions for this performance took place in early January, resulting in a quick rehearsal schedule of less than a month before the debut performance. The project grew out of a desire to expose dancers to a variety of teaching styles and fresh patterns of movement. Artistic Director Brian Murphy feels strongly that opportunities to work with a variety of teachers are "essential for a dancer's growth." Many pieces in this performance featured dancers at multiple levels working together, another challenge that Murphy felt helped dancers to develop and think creatively.
This year’s choreographers included Juliana Freude of Neos Dance Theatre; Lieneke Matte and Kate Webb of Verb Ballets; Regina Pietraroia, Owner and Director of Dance Arts by Regina; and WCA Dance Faculty Ethan Michael Lee, Brian Murphy, Kimberly Payne, Kaitlin Shrekhise, & Lauren Stenroos.
