Santa’s Cookie Dish

This class focuses on learning fundamental skills to create many different styles of clay projects such as a haunted house and animal bowls in session I followed with a hot cocoa mug and a holiday wreath picture frame in session II. You will learn about coil building, slab work, and sculptural techniques. Students will also learn a variety of methods to decorate and glaze their creations. Each week will feature a different structured project along with time for independent exploration.

Claybirds: Hand-building Ages 10-13

This class focuses on teaching the fundamentals of clay techniques used in handbuilding, both functional and sculptural works. Students will learn the basics of design and creative problem solving while bringing their vision to life. Projects will include creatures and monsters in session I and in session II castles and characters. Slip decorating and glaze application will complete the ceramic experience.

Learn all the skills to create your first pots on the potter’s wheel. Wedging, centering, opening, throwing, trimming, adding handles, and glazing will be covered in this class. We will create simple forms such as bowls, vases, plates, and mugs. This class is for the beginner.

Claybirds: Wheel Part 2 Ages 10-13

Now that you have learned the basics on the potter’s wheel, we can begin to refine your skills as well as move on to more complex creations. We will explore lidded vessels, composite pots, pulling handles, altering pots and increasing the size of the pots we create.

In this class you will continue to review and refine beginning skills on the wheel. We will move onto more complex creations as your abilities increase. We will learn about altering forms, pulling handles, creating lidded vessels and most of all gaining confidence through repetition. Prerequisite: Beginning Wheel or upon approval from instructor.

Transform functional work into sculptural masterpieces. Begin with animal sculpting, building your background knowledge of various sculpting techniques. Sign up for one that interests you or sign up for all three and receive a discount. All workshops require participants to bring in previously completed work—please carefully read descriptions of each class to be sure you come prepared with the right materials.


Slip Decorating

The fundamentals of application of slip to create color and design on your pottery and sculpture. Techniques include sgraffito, slip trailing, stencils, mocha diffusion, and accretion. Participants will need to bring both leather-hard and bone dry pieces.

Terra Sigillata

Learn to mix and apply terra sigillata or the process of painting and burnishing using ultra-fine clay to create a unique sheen on unglazed pieces. Participants will need to bring bone dry pottery.

Engobes and Washes

Bring something new and different to your pottery through the use of engobes and washes. These surface decorating techniques are great for functional and sculptural PIECES. Participants will need to bring unglazed, bisque pottery.

Raku Workshop Ages 18+

Expand your ceramics repertoire with a new firing technique! Raku firing has been a long standing tradition originating in Japan. This technique is low fire and the pottery (ceramics) is taken out while still red hot and placed in an air-tight container with combustibles, such as sawdust, newspapers, etc. This process creates colors and patterns in the surface, creating a unique look every time. The pots you bring for this unique firing process can be no larger than 4” wide and 12” in height.
